2012 is quickly approaching, meaning that New Year’s resolutions will be the talk of parties and gatherings wherever you go. Whether the vow is to lose weight, get in shape, eat healthier, get more sleep…people will start with high hopes.

But even with the strongest resolve and willpower, it’s always nice to have some reinforcement to make such resolutions a reality. That’s where fairy wishes come in. Since fairies are magical beings, their wishes are extra powerful. But how do you get a fairy to wish on your behalf?

Cerridwen is the goddess of dark prophetic powers. She is the keeper of the cauldron of the underworld, in which inspiration and divine knowledge are brewed. She is often equated with the famous Greek crone, Hecate, and to the Irish Badb. She is also sometimes related to the Greek Muses, only in a more violent and dark form.

Phooka, pooka, puca is a shape shifting fairy. Commonly seen as a horse, also can be a rabbit, dog, goblin. Sometimes will take humans on a ride, but not known to harm them (just scare them a bit). "Puca's share" is a small offering of harvest left out. Anything not harvested by Nov. 1 is considered destroyed by Puca.

FAIRY DOORS AND KNOCK-KNOCK JOKES

Fairies are fond of two things: Knock-knock jokes, and tiny doors that are exclusively crafted for them. For those of you out of the fae loop, FAIRY DOORS are miniature facsimiles of human doors, representing a wide range of architectural styles. Ann Arbor, Michigan was the scene of a Fairy Door infestation in 1993 when local artist and fairy fan, Jonathan Wright, decided that the depressed downtown needed a spritely pick-me-up. Fairy Doors started appearing next to doors of local business establishments, including the newly relocated Google. This created an influx of city residents, curious adults and children wanting to check out these mini doors of wonder. The children left offerings for the fairies, while adults stimulated the city’s economy. Want a little of that good fortune for yourself? Build your own fairy door by cutting a 2’ by 1’ rectangle out of a piece of plywood. Use sandpaper to smooth all edges and flat surfaces. Depending on its anticipated destination, cover with indoor paint, exterior latex paint, or a wood stain - two coats for each side. Measure a 2-3" perimeter up the longer sides of the rectangle, and down from the anticipated door’s "top," to be used as the new fairy doorjamb. Paint it a different color from the shade that was chosen for the actual door, or glue decorative stones, shells, moss, or dried flowers along the "jamb" to give it definition. Use a decorative cabinet knob, found at any hardware store, as a doorknob. Attach the door to the desired location with a drill or a wall hanging mount. Want to go super easy? Recycle the door and jamb of an old dollhouse, or nab a rectangular wooden picture frame from a local thrift store. Voila… instant Fairy Door!

Berries & Fairies

My favorite time and place to look for fairies is in the early morning hours among a patch of wild berries. This is when dew moisturizes everything in sight, and a wonderful stillness and peace surround the trees, trails, and secluded patches. Here in the Pacific Northwest, there are literally millions of places to find berries and fairies, due to the temperate climate, plethora of woodlands and parks, and the rainfall that makes the berries plump and juicy.

At this time of the morning, fairies are preoccupied trying to get their chores done before the heat of the day becomes too oppressive. They tend to be a little more lax regarding human “sightings” and “interactions.” Although they have great places to hide in these environs – behind cascading vines, under mats of berries growing over stumps – the normally shy fairies let their work ethic overwhelm them as they toil busily amongst the most intrepid of berry picker.

All plants have fairy caretakers, including those of the thorny kind. These sprites are great multi-taskers as they help promote the pollination process with their ally the bee; redirect raindrops to their thirsty plants; and keep the earth surrounding each plant mulched and fertilized. They also ward off destructive slugs, ants, and centipedes.

There are the more cultivated berry fairies such as the Strawberry Fairy, beautifully depicted by renowned fairy illustrator and author Cicely Mary Barker in her book, The Complete Book of the Flower Fairies Her observations of nature have also brought to life the more exotic berry fairies in the form of the Sloe Fairy and the Elder Fairy. Barker’s Sunshine & Showers A Flower Fairies Handbook represents in splendid detail these amazing creatures in their beloved environments.
But not all in the berry patch is idyllic. There are many dangers that fairies must guard against, such as berry eating insects, animals, and birds. As a result, fairies have become masters at evading open beaks and chomping mouths. They have also learned how to steer clear of the tramping feet of oblivious, careless berry pickers.

After all their hard work, fairies like to reap some of the berry bounty. They concoct amazing desserts with the fruit, especially if they have access to a nearby kitchen or pantry. They have been known to team up with the obliging Kitchen Fairy to create such sweet and savory concoctions as: Fairy Berries - strawberries that fairies have dipped in chocolate or white chocolate colored pink; Fairy Berry Smoothies; Fairy Jellies & Jams; Fairy Berry Pie; and Fairy Berry Parfaits. Fairies also use the juice of berries to write short messages on logs and stumps to other fairy friends in the berry patch. Tiny and barely legible, these communiqués are a fairy’s way of texting, and another sign that fairies are in the vicinity. So stay alert, tred lightly, and happy berry fairy hunting.

FAIRY PARTY PIZZAZ In the hierarchy of “kid cool”, fairies rank up there with princesses, pirates, and ninjas. What better way to celebrate their enchanting beauty and magical abilities than by throwing a Fairy Party to promote some extra”fairy”estrial fun. Be it a birthday, tea party, or a super special play date, a fairy theme is sure to engage even the grumpiest of trolls. Plus, the theme is easy to age up or down, and as simple or extravagant to orchestrate as the hostess chooses.

Invitations can be hand made with fairy, butterfly, or flower clip art, stamps, or “cookie cutter” cutouts glued on card stock. Party details can be written on the inside of the card, accompanied by a bit of whimsical fairy verse. Is your life too hectic to be crafty? As far as party décor, fairy festivities can be a more natural woodland theme, or a sparkles and glitter affair. Traditional fairy colors of pink, purple, white and silver can be used for tablecloths, ribbons, bunting and balloons. Tables can be set with flowers (real or artificial), large green construction paper leaves as placemats, teacups and saucers, etc. Don’t want to risk the little ones chipping your Grandmother’s china? Paper plates, cups, and napkins with fairies imprinted on them are a safe bet and easy to clean up. Also, miniature tea sets such as the Fairy Tea Time Basket are another alternative to using the “good china.” Paper Mache mushrooms, pinecones, leaves with glitter (fairy dust) and flower petals scattered about can all help set the mood, as will strings of tiny white lights.

One of the perks of a Fairy Party is being able to metamorphize into a beautiful fairy. Costumes equal success, so within the body of the invitation, suggest party attire to be pink or pastel leotards and tights or leggings. As the guests arrive, they receive a wand or a simple piece of craft wooden doweling, to be personalized by each party guest with ribbons, beads and appliqués. They will then receive a pair of wings forged from cellophane, cardboard, or wax paper and a tutu of tulle, paper leaves, or fabric leaves hot glued to a material band. A headband or tiara is optional, and could be another craft activity for the guests to busy themselves with. If you’d rather have less rustic, more professional looking fairies, the Dress Up Wing Set w/Headband and Wand might be the way to go. The party guests would surely covet these costume accessories, and the parade of fairies would be colorful and festive indeed.

Mushroom-cakes (cupcakes with “muffin tops”), chocolate covered strawberries, sugar cookies in fairy forms, or magical beans (jelly beans or gummy beans wrapped in fabric and tied with ribbons) are a few other sweet ideas.

It is universally known that fairies love to have fun, and that games must be a part of any fairy gathering. Regular party games with a twist, like pin the horn on the Unicorn, or musical chairs with toad”stools” are favorites. In fairy tag, one fairy has a “freeze” wand and another a “fly away” wand to set fairy captives free. A fairy scavenger hunt can involve teams, with an adult helper, looking for natural items (leaves, pebbles, moss) to rebuild the Queen Fairy’s castle, demolished by a careless Ogre. And a Maypole structure with ribbons can easily be constructed and is a great way of getting fairies to practice their dancing and flying skills - especially if music from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker is playing in the background. Also, a crafting and coloring area is a must-have for fairy down time.

In addition to their wands and wings, party guests will flip over fairy party favors. Make fairy funnels out of doilies and fill them with glitter pens, fairy stickers, sweets, and pixie sticks. Or Flower Fairy Party Bags can be stuffed with fairy treasures such as bottled fairy dust, wands or tiny tiaras. A more natural parting gift is to give each guest a small pot to decorate, and then allow them to pot their own flower from an assortment provided.

Remember, it’s all about creating a fairyland atmosphere where everything is miniature and magical. So have fun and party on fairy friends….

The term Fairy Bread conjures up visions of lighter then air loaves of enchantment. What we found after a little snooping on the Internet is that Fairy Bread is actually a beloved snack from Australia and New Zealand, which all ages go gaga over. The recipe: White bread slices spread with butter or margarine, and then topped off with multi-colored sprinkles. Butter and sugar…what’s not to love?

We also discovered the mania behind Fairy Bread. On one of several Facebook sites devoted to Fairy Bread, (462,060 people “liked” this particular site), fans weren’t afraid to go on (and on) about their love affair with the stuff. We’d never seen so many adjectives for tasty! Quite a few volunteered ideas of how they personalized the sweet treat to excite their own particular palate. Some toasted their bread, or substituted a healthier wheat bread to offset the guilt of eating butter encrusted with sugar. Some opted for covering the bread with peanut butter, honey, grape jelly, Nutella or even a reduced fat spread rather than sticking to butter. The toppings were as varied as clear sugar crystals, chocolate shavings, or nuts and provided a good way of using up leftover holiday decorating sprinkles. Some even used cookie cutter or geometric shapes to glam up the appearance of their “glitter bread.”

It’s no surprise that this delightful dessert is a big hit at kids’ parties “down under.” In addition to being inexpensive to throw together, and immediately gratifying when eaten, Fairy Bread is something kids can make themselves. That is, if you don’t mind the little ones sporting a butter knife. Steps are: Cut off crusts of white bread/spread on butter or other adherent of choice/ apply sprinkles (might be easier to put sprinkles in a shallow plate and than lay bread on top, aka, “dredge” method)/ cut the bread into desired shapes/arrange shapes on a colorful plate. There you have it. Some supervision might be a good idea if you don’t want to have hundreds and thousands of errant sprinkles all over the kitchen, especially on the floor. Eating sprinkles…good. Walking on them with shoes or bare feet…annoying!

Kids and adults are fans, but do fairies eat Fairy Bread? There is no conclusive evidence one-way or the other. But just the presence of Fairy Bread, with its kaleidoscope of colored candy toppings, is a sure to way to lure fairies into your kitchen. Midsummer's Eve

It's that time of year when the most celebrated holiday by the fairies has arrived with the coming of the Summer Solstice - also known as Midsummer's Eve. On June 21st, when the day is longer than the night, twilight will be at its longest in the sky revealing all the naked eye cannot see. More importantly to us humans, it is a truly magical time when the fairy world of enchantment opens up to ours - making the best day of the year to see fairies! So, be prepared: charge the batteries in your digital cameras and treat yourself to a magical and wondrous evening of possibly capturing never to be forgotten pictures of fairies.
Taking Pictures of Fairies Outside:
If you have a nature trail, forest or glen near by, you might want to go there. If you have a fairy garden, blooming flowers or plants favored by fairies, you might want to start there.
Wait for the evening sky and take your walk or sit on a blanket or chair. Many people have reported in this quiet time of looking around, they will start to see quick sparkles of lights from the corners of their eyes. If you happen to see one of these flashes of lights, take a picture right away. If you see a shadow or a movement, take a picture right away. And even if you don't see any of these things, you can still take pictures and capture delightful images!

Fairies and Bubbles

Bubbles have long been associated with fairies, some traditions state that fairies are born from bubbles. Others say fairies love to rest their wings or play, by floating on bubbles. There are numerous pieces of vintage art work featuring fairies on bubbles by artists such as Hilda T. Miller and Ida Outhwaite, and the tradition continues with today's fairy artists such as Jessica Galbreath, Amy Brown and Nene Thomas. Which ever the case may be, blowing bubbles is fun at any age. So why not encourage fairies into your life by blowing bubbles!

Bubble Recipes: Bubbles can be made with just water and dish soap but the addition of glycerine, found at most pharmacies, helps the bubbles to last longer and get larger by hindering the drying of the outside surface which makes the bubble shrink and pop. Here are a couple of recipes for making your own long lasting bubble mixtures.

Homemade Bubbles
from Kids Domain Craft Exchange:

1/2 (500 ml) cup dishwashing detergent
4-1/2 (4.5 liter) cup water
4 tablespoons (60 ml) glycerin (available in pharmacies or chemical supply houses)
Measure out the water, detergent, and glycerin into container with a cover and stir gently. The longer you let the mixture set, the larger the bubbles are and the longer they seem to last.

Ann says: "This recipe is a winner. It's easy to mix up--and inexpensive to boot. Stir together 6 parts water, 2 parts Joy dishwashing liquid (this brand works the best), and 3/4 part corn syrup. Store in a covered container. Try experimenting with a variety of homemade bubble wands: pipe cleaners bent into interesting shapes, cookie cutters, yogurt lids with the centers cut out, and so on. For a giant bubblemaker, cut off the top and bottom of a large metal can with a can opener and hammer the inside edges until they are smooth (a parent's job). Dip either end in the solution and wave through the air."

Fairy Gardens:
Inviting fairies into your home and garden can be a great project to undertake by yourself or with children. You can make it as simple or elaborate as you wish. If you have a yard you can start simple by adding a fairy door to the bottom of a tree or collecting items like stones, twigs, small branches, moss and bark and styling them into a small dwelling hidden in a protected place. (For great inspirational ideas check out our books Fairy Houses Everywhere, and Fairy Houses and Beyond by Barry and Tracy Kane in our Books & Videos Department.) You can plant flowers around it to attract the wee folk. Even if you do not have a yard you can create a small garden indoors in a planter using Irish moss and small houseplants. Try adding a small mirror surrounded by pebbles to make a little pond. Fairy Sighting:

“While walking down a forested road one late afternoon, early evening, I kept seeing twinkling lights of different colors. From time to time I would stop and look around but didn’t’ see anyone or any animals. The forested road was quiet and serene as nature was exhaling from the warm summer day and preparing for night. I remembered I had my camera with me, so I took it out of my back pack and as soon as I saw the colored lights twinkle again, I took a picture - and lo-and- behold I captured a picture of a fairy!”.....Carmel, Washington State

Fairy lore has been found around the world from every continet dating back hundreds and even thousands of years ago. From Eskimos, to Egypt, from China to Chile, from Africa to Australia, from Native Americans to Europe and of course some of the most famous stories coming from the Irish, English and Scottish lands. The spelling of the name fairy, as you have probably seen, is presented many different ways: Fairy, Fairie, Faery, Fae, Fay, Feerie. But no matter the spelling, all are referring to the marvoulus little magical beings who have been on planet earth a very long time. In overview, our research of fairies indicates that the orgin of the name refers to “little people” or “little folk.” This would mean that the word fairy included fairies, elves, gnomes, pixies, dwarfts, leperchauns, etc. However, today, we use the word to refer to the elusive and mystical beings that mostly have wings, possess magical powers, and are dedicated to the care of nature and Mother Earth.
